How to Read the Specs: mm, Mil, and Plank Size
Three numbers tell you most of what a flooring catalog has to say.
Thickness in millimeters (mm)
Thickness is the total height of the plank, from 5.0 mm up to 14 mm in our catalog. A thicker plank is quieter to walk on, feels more solid, and hides small imperfections in the slab underneath. It does not make the floor more scratch-resistant. That is the wear layer's job, and people mix the two up all the time.
Wear layer in mil (not millimeters)
The wear layer is the clear top coat that takes the everyday abuse. It is measured in mils — a mil is one thousandth of an inch, a completely different unit from a millimeter. This is the number that decides whether your floor still looks good fifteen years from now.
A lot of big-box vinyl plank has a 12 mil wear layer. The vinyl plank we install runs from 20 up to 28 mil. In practice, that is the difference between a floor that shows every chair leg and dog nail and one that does not. Ask any other company that quotes you what their wear layer is. Most will not put that number in writing.
Plank size in inches
Width and length, in inches. A 9" x 60" plank covers a large living room with fewer seams and looks calmer. A 7" x 48" plank is a better fit for smaller rooms and hallways. There is no right answer — it comes down to looks, and that is something you should judge in your own room, not on a showroom floor.
Waterproof or Water-Resistant? The Difference Matters
The two terms sound alike, but they do not mean the same thing. Here is the difference, and where each color in this catalog fits.
Waterproof — the 94 vinyl plank colors
Waterproof means the core cannot absorb water. All five vinyl plank collections in this catalog are waterproof, and so are all 26 sale colors. A spilled drink, a pet accident, or a dishwasher leak can sit there and then wipe right up.

Water-resistant — the 6 laminate colors
Water-resistant means the floor handles spills as long as you wipe them up. Our laminate ranges from 8 mm AC2 up to 14 mm AC5, and we also carry a laminate line rated for 300 hours of water protection. Ask us which one fits the room.

In a Florida home, that distinction decides which rooms a floor belongs in. When you call (352) 425-6387, tell us which rooms you are doing, and we will tell you which of the 100 colors work there before you fall in love with one.
Which Floor Goes in Which Room?
- Living room and dining room — Any of these collections works. Wider planks look best in open floor plans.
- Kitchen — Waterproof vinyl plank is the best choice. This is where spills happen.
- Bedrooms — Vinyl plank or laminate. If you want something soft and quiet, we also install carpet in Summerfield with padding included.
- Hallways and entryways — Vinyl plank with a wear layer of 20 up to 28 mil. This is the highest-traffic area of the house.
- Laundry room — Waterproof vinyl plank or tile.
- Lanai — Tile, not plank. A lanai goes through big swings in outdoor temperature and humidity, so we quote tile flooring in Summerfield for that space instead.

Catalog Questions From Homeowners
What is a wear layer, and why does it matter?
The wear layer is the clear protective coat on top of a vinyl plank, measured in mil — one thousandth of an inch. A lot of big-box vinyl plank is 12 mil. The vinyl plank in our catalog runs from 20 up to 28 mil. A thicker wear layer resists scratches from dragged furniture, walker and cane tips, and dog nails. It is the one number that decides how your floor looks in year fifteen.
Is thicker flooring always better?
No. Thickness in millimeters controls how solid and quiet a floor feels underfoot and how well it bridges small dips in a slab. It does not control scratch resistance. A 5.0 mm plank with a 20 up to 28 mil wear layer will hold up to daily wear better than a thicker plank with a 12 mil wear layer. Most homes in our area sit on a flat concrete slab, so 5.0 mm to 6.5 mm is plenty.
How does your laminate handle water?
Our laminate ranges from 8 mm AC2 up to 14 mm AC5 and is water-resistant, so everyday spills are no problem as long as you wipe them up. We also carry a laminate line rated for 300 hours of water protection. If you want 100% waterproof flooring anywhere in the house, our vinyl plank collections are the way to go.
Do you sell the flooring without installation?
Everything in our catalog is quoted installed — material, labor, and removal and haul-away of your old carpet, laminate, or vinyl; ceramic tile and hardwood removal, baseboards, quarter round, and transitions are quoted separately. That is how we can give you a real number like $3.99 per square foot instead of a material price that grows once labor is added.
Can I see the colors at your showroom?
Yes. Our showroom is at 16770 US-441 Ste 602, Summerfield, FL 34491, and you are welcome anytime we are open. Most of our customers prefer it the other way around: we load up the samples and bring them to the house. Seeing a plank on your own floor, in your own light, is the best way to know.
How many colors do you carry in total?
100. Twenty-six are in this month's sale, and 74 are in our six regular collections. Of those 100, 94 are waterproof vinyl plank and 6 are water-resistant laminate. We can bring any of them to your home.
