How to Read the Specs: mm, Mil and Plank Size
Three numbers. That is the whole language of a flooring catalog.
Thickness in millimeters (mm)
Thickness is the total height of the plank, from 5.0 mm to 12.0 mm in our catalog. A thicker plank is quieter to walk on, feels more solid, and hides small imperfections in the slab underneath. It does not make the floor more scratch-resistant. That is the wear layer's job, and people mix these two up constantly.
Wear layer in mil (not millimeters)
The wear layer is the clear coat on top that takes the abuse. It is measured in mil, which is one thousandth of an inch — a completely different unit from a millimeter. This is the number that decides whether your floor still looks good in fifteen years.
Most vinyl plank sold at retail carries a 12 mil wear layer. Everything in our vinyl catalog is 20 mil, and the 8.0 mm promotion color is 22 mil. In practice, that is the difference between a floor that shows every chair leg and dog nail and a floor that does not. Ask any other quote you get in Summerfield what their wear layer is. Most flooring companies here do not put the number in writing.
Plank size in inches
Length and width, in inches. A 60" x 9.05" plank covers a large living room with fewer seams and reads calmer to the eye. A 48" x 7.09" plank suits smaller rooms and hallways better. There is no right answer — it is a look, and it is a look you should judge in your own room, not on a showroom floor.
Waterproof or Water-Resistant? The Difference Matters
Waterproof means the core cannot absorb water. Water-resistant means it can, just slowly. All four vinyl plank collections in this catalog are waterproof. A spilled glass, a pet accident or a dishwasher drip can sit on them and be wiped up.
Our 12 mm laminate is water-resistant. It handles a wiped-up spill fine. It does not handle standing water, and no laminate does, no matter what the box says. In a Florida home, that distinction decides which rooms it belongs in.
Which Floor Goes in Which Room?
- Living room and dining room — Any collection here works. Wider planks look best in open floor plans.
- Kitchen — Waterproof vinyl plank only. This is where spills live.
- Bedrooms — Vinyl plank or laminate. If you want soft and quiet, we also install carpet in Summerfield with padding included.
- Hallways and entryways — Vinyl plank with a 20 mil wear layer. This is the highest-traffic strip in the house.
- Laundry room — Waterproof vinyl plank or tile. Never laminate.
- Lanai — Tile, not plank. A lanai swings with the outside temperature and humidity, and we quote tile flooring in Summerfield for that space instead.

The wear layer is the clear protective coat on top of a vinyl plank, measured in mil — one thousandth of an inch. Most vinyl plank sold at retail is 12 mil. It is the single number that decides how the floor looks in year fifteen.
Is thicker flooring always better?
No. Thickness in millimeters controls how solid and quiet a floor feels underfoot and how well it bridges small dips in a slab. It does not control scratch resistance. A 5.0 mm plank with a 20 mil wear layer will hold up to daily wear better than a thicker plank with a 12 mil wear layer. In most Summerfield homes, which sit on a flat concrete slab, 5.0 mm to 6.5 mm is plenty.
Is the laminate in your catalog waterproof?
No. Our 12 mm AC3 laminate is water-resistant, not waterproof. Its core is wood-based, so standing water will swell it. Wipe up a spill and it is fine. Leave water on it overnight and it is not. If you want a floor that shrugs off water anywhere in the house, choose one of the four waterproof vinyl plank collections instead.
